We believe that mentorship is one of the most effective ways to inspire and empower our students with special needs. Over the past three months, we have been privileged to host two remarkable mentors, Michael Okpotu Onoja and Lara from Brazil who have dedicated their time, skills, and compassion to our students through our structured mentorship and volunteering program.
Michael focused on ICT, guiding our students through the basics of computers, digital literacy, and programming skills. His patient and innovative approach made complex concepts accessible, helping our students gain confidence in using technology. This not only improved their technical skills but also nurtured problem-solving abilities and critical thinking, skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
Lara, on the other hand, brought her culinary expertise into the classroom by teaching our students cooking and food preparation. From delicious pasta to delightful Brazilian truffles, she created engaging lessons that combined creativity, teamwork, and independence. Our students were able to recreate these dishes successfully, adding their own personal touches and feeling immense pride in their achievements.
Together, Michael and Lara’s contributions have demonstrated the power of mentorship. The outcomes of this program have been highly effective. Students gained practical ICT and culinary skills they can build on for the future.
They showed greater confidence and creativity, both in the classroom and in their daily interactions.
Most importantly, they experienced the joy of learning through doing, proving that with the right guidance, every child’s abilities can shine.
As we conclude this 3-month mentorship cycle, BTVC extends its heartfelt appreciation to Michael and Lara for their selfless service, passion, and commitment. They have truly left a lasting impact on our students and staff alike.
We are also excited to announce that BTVC will continue to welcome more mentors in the coming months, ensuring our students benefit from diverse skills and perspectives—from ICT and vocational training to arts, life skills, and beyond.
Our mission is clear: to help young adults with special needs transition into independence by focusing on their abilities, not their disabilities. With the continued support of mentors like Michael and Lara, we are confident that our students will keep breaking barriers, building confidence, and preparing to live fulfilled, independent lives.
Thank you, Michael and Lara, for being part of the BTVC story.
